Buju Banton Meets With San Francisco Gay Activists & Leaders

San Francisco gay activists and community leaders met with reggae artist Buju Banton Monday afternoon (October 12) to discuss “his troubling history with gay people.” In attendance were Supervisor Bevan Dufty, who arranged the meeting, executive director of the SF gay community center, Rebecca Rolfe, Equality California’s Andrea Shorter, Supervisor Eric Mar and gay activist, Michael Petrelis. According to Buju and his advisers, this was his first meeting ever with gay advocates and they desire to put an end to the controversy that follows him over anti-gay lyrics in his song, “Boom Bye Bye,” which Banton recorded in his late teens.

Petrelis described the meeting as “very civil and production, ” adding, “we made several suggestion for him to consider, in order to start to undo some of the problems he has in the gay community because of his past anti-gay lyrics.”

Suggestions made included Banton making statements in Jamaica calling for love towards gays, donating to the JFLAG group, holding a town hall meeting in Kingston about the need to respect gays, and singing about loving gay people. All the suggestions were rejected.

In late August of this year, concert promoter Live Nation had announced the cancellation of a series of Buju Banton concerts after gay activists campaigned for him to be dropped due to his anti-gay lyrics. However, since then, Banton has scheduled upcoming shows here in the U.S., just at different venues.

50 Cent Defends Kanye West-Lady Gaga “Gay Tour” Comment + “Fame Kills” Tour Cancelled

During an interview with New York radio host Angie Martinez, rapper 50 Cent accused Kanye of pandering to the gay community and called his join-tour with Lady Gaga “the gay tour.”

“Kanye’s cool with the gay folk,” said 50. “I have nothing against them, but he’s cool with them. He goes, drops his video off to them. Remember 808s & Heartbreak? Where’d he premiere it? Ellen DeGeneres. He went there to premiere his video. He’s conscious of the gay community and wants them to buy his CDs.”

After receiving a bit of backlash for his comments, 50 took to his website to release the following statement: “During an interview with Angie Martinez yesterday, certain comments I made were taken entirely out of context. When I referred to the Lady Gaga tour as ‘the gay tour,’ I was basically repeating what I thought she had referred to the tour in the past. It was not my intention to offend anyone. I don’t have a problem with anyone’s lifestyle and have no issue with Lady Gaga. She makes great music.”

Hmmm. The fact Kanye’s name was left out of his apology only affirms it was 50s original intention to take a shot at Kanye and his perceived sexuality.

In more “Fame Kills” news, tour promoter Live Nation out of nowhere issued a press release yesterday (October 1) announcing the cancellation of the much-anticipated tour. There’s speculation Kanye’s recent antics - VMAs mic snatch and tantrums over chicken - was just more than Gaga wished to deal with. Damn, looks like fame killed the tour before it could even begin. “Real Housewives” Producers Plan To Release All-Gay Version

Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise is set to go gay. Word is the production team behind The Real Housewives of Atlanta are in the developmentstages of an all gay version of the wildly popular series. The new reality show, tentatively titled “Kept,” will focus on a group of Manhattan party boys living lavishly. Designer Marc Jacobs is rumored to already be part of the cast.

An open-casting call will be held in New York City later this month, with filming excepted to begin in November.

The series is set to air on MTV’s Logo channel in 2010.

Warren G: I Ain’t Against The Gays…But Let’s Keep It Behind The Scenes

West Coast rapper Warren G recently sat down with Vanity Fair for a little Q&A on music and money. After being questioned on the impact of hip-hop lyrics that glorify sex, money and overindulgence, Warren G threw the interviewer and anyone reading the interview for a loop when he suddenly declared “I ain’t against the gays,” further adding, “I’m just against it being promoted to kids.”


Suddenly, the interview went from an examination of the impact of bragging about stacks in a recession to Warren’s thoughts on gay images in the media. According to Warren, “I know it happens, but let’s keep it behind the scenes.”

Tyson Beckford Admits If He Was Gay He’d Sleep With President Obama

Model and reality T.V. host Tyson Beckford appeared on a recent episode of Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” along with “Real Housewife” and friend Kandi Burruss.

Teen Who Underwent Gay Exorcism Talks To Tyra: “I Still Have Temptations”

Wednesday (September 23) on the The Tyra Show, Tyra interviewed Jeffrey, the 16 year old boy who underwent an exorcism at Manifested Glory Ministries Church in Connecticut to rid himself of homosexual demons. The exorcism was videotaped and appeared on Youtube.

Jeffrey explained in detail how he first had homosexual thoughts at 5, started declaring himself as gay by 10 and began dating boys by 14. The tables turned one Sunday when two women brought the young boy to Manifested Glory. That day no regular service was held, instead, Jeffrey underwent an exorcism by the “Prophet” Patricia McKinney and husband “Overseer” Kelvin McKinney.

Jeffrey now believes he is no longer homosexual, however, he still has “temptations.” According to Jeffrey, “it’s still a process I have to go through to be fully delivered. The spirit of homosexuality is not in me because I choose not to live in that way. I allow God, the Holy Spirit, to come in me to change the things that was in me to do well outside the church.”

“Prophet” Patricia McKinney and “Overseer” Kelvin McKinney also appeared on the show to talk of their special powers and process of “casting out unclean spirits.”

Kamora, a mentor from True Colors activist group, also appeared on the show and shared with the audience the damage these “exorcisms” cause people. “What happened in that video as hurtful, painful and not okay,” Kamora says. “What they did destroys the souls of children. ” According to Kamora, these kinds of things happen all the time. Every other week she gets a call from someone dealing with a kid who’s gone through this.

Lady Gaga To Kanye: My Music Is Gay, My Show Is Gay… And It’s Going To Remain Gay

In a recent interview with Out magazine, Lady Gaga admitted that before she agreed to go on tour with Kanye West this fall, she told him, “I just want to be clear before we decide to do this together: I’m gay. My music is gay. My show is gay. And I love that it’s gay. And I love my gay fans and they’re all going to be coming out to our show. And it’s going to remain gay.”


Well, while Lady Gaga’s candor was much appreciated, it may have been an unnecessary declaration. Obviously, Lady Gaga wasn’t in attendance at Kanye’s “Glow in the Dark” show in New York City last year (August 2008). He closed out the show with a 20 minute PSA, ok, it was really like 5 minutes but it felt like 20, speaking out against homophobia and the use of homophobic slurs. Kanye’s a friend to the gays honey.

President Obama Declares June LGBT Pride Month

Yesterday, the White House issued a press release in which President Obama declared June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.

During LGBT Pride Month, Obama calls for the commemoration of the Stonewall Riots which took place in NYC (June 1969) and for commitment to achieving equal justice under the law for LGBT Americans.

Obama further calls upon “the LBGT community, the Congress, and the American people to work together to promote equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans.

LGBT Americans have made, and continue to make, great and lasting contributions that continue to strengthen the fabric of American society. There are many well-respected LGBT leaders in all professional fields, including the arts and business communities. LGBT Americans also mobilized the Nation to respond to the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic and have played a vital role in broadening this country’s response to the HIV pandemic.

Due in no small part to the determination and dedication of the LGBT rights movement, more LGBT Americans are living their lives openly today than ever before. I am proud to be the first President to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an Administration. These individuals embody the best qualities we seek in public servants, and across my Administration — in both the White House and the Federal agencies — openly LGBT employees are doing their jobs with distinction and professionalism.

The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress, but there is more work to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect.

My Administration has partnered with the LGBT community to advance a wide range of initiatives. At the international level, I have joined efforts at the United Nations to decriminalize homosexuality around the world. Here at home, I continue to support measures to bring the full spectrum of equal rights to LGBT Americans. These measures include enhancing hate crimes laws, supporting civil unions and Federal rights for LGBT couples, outlawing discrimination in the workplace, ensuring adoption rights, and ending the existing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in a way that strengthens our Armed Forces and our national security.
